Holiday House Montalcino | Luxury Vacation Farmhouse in Tuscany

Santa Lucia

These 3 independent apartments and 1 suite are not only most attractively and tastefully designed and furnished, with utmost attention to stylish detail, including displays of original artwork, but they are also set in an ideal location just outside the historic centre of Montalcino. Nestling at the foot of the hill on which the town stands, the shared gardens enjoy superb views out across the terraced clusters of medieval houses, right up to the historic town-hall belltower at the very top. In a raised, suntrap position in one corner of the grounds lie the three small communal pools, with their sunterrace alongside.

These properties are housed in an old, converted furnace or kiln, where bricks were produced in the 19th century, and the recent restoration work has carefully preserved many of the original, beautiful, structural features: such as the graceful brick vaulting and archways that divide the rooms internally; the mellow tufo-stone external walls; the terracotta-tiled roofs; the terracotta-tiled/wood-beamed ceilings; and the whitewashed interior walls. This traditional architectural context has been strikingly complemented by the integration of modern design elements, which include light-wood parquet flooring and built-in units, large, bright, glass doors and some stunning, original, contemporary art and photographic work decorating the walls.

GARDEN & SWIMMING POOL

Located in a quiet residential district in the lower part of historic Montalcino, just at the foot of the hill below the town-walls, the property grounds are enclosed by a high, mellow-stone wall. Double wrought-iron entrance gates open on to a small, gravel courtyard, shaded by a mature fig-tree, where informal outdoor parking spaces are reserved for the private use of guests only. This is an enormous asset, as the town-centre is a traffic-free, pedestrianised zone, where parking is truly at a premium, especially in the summer season!
The ground-level apartment is accessible directly from this forecourt, although its little, private lawn, the perfect spot for al fresco dining, is screened from view by a tall hedge. Stone steps, with handrail, proceed up to the communal garden and the three upper-level apartments grouped round it. The well-tended lawns of this idyllic, sloping garden are set in raised, stone-wall beds and are dotted with a host of shady, native trees, such as mimosa, pine, fir and olive. The grass is crossed by terracotta-tiled pathways, which weave their way among olive trees and sage plants, past typically Tuscan lavender, rosemary and rose-bushes in ceramic pots. An impressive, giant agave plant stands at the far end, against the perimeter wall that encloses this secluded, internal space, where only restful birdsong punctuates the silence!

From here, as from the inviting gazebo encircled by olive trees and furnished with table and chairs, the spectacular scenic backdrop can be savoured at leisure: in one direction, uphill to the extraordinary townscape of Montalcino, silhouetted against the sky; in the other, up a series of sloping olive-grove terraces to a pretty little hilltop church nearby.

Also located in the grounds is a wood-burning pizza-oven for those special, relaxing, open-air dinners, as well as three small interconnected pools, plus adjoining raised sunterrace, accessed via some stone steps, with handrail. One of the upper-level pools is a jacuzzi, while the other spills down decoratively into the lower pool. Further steps, with railings, lead up to two outdoor showers and a small indoor Turkish Bath.

Montalcino

It was made famous by Brunello, one of the world’s best red wines. But Montalcino is also a magnificent Italian city of art which, from its hill, dominates the 3000 hectares of vineyards (1500 for Brunello) that have given it fame and wealth.

We booked the smallest studio, Basile' (the only studio without a kitchen) but it has a full breakfast set up, fridge, kettle and espresso machine for morning coffees outside. It is a beautiful, clean studio with plenty of wardrobe space for us to spread out for a weeks stay. We absolutely loved the little pool area and lazing around the garden. The location of this hotel is perfect for being close to town. Lisa and Andrea are the best hosts ever. They were so warm and welcoming it really felt like we were staying with friends. Lisa arranged some amazing winery visits for us. Pogio Antico and San Carlo, both were amazing Brunello producers. One was a slick sprawling but still boutique winery and San Carlo had the heart of all of Tuscany's wineries combined. We absolutely loved both, and the fact that one of the Brunello's we bought for 40 euro sells for over $300 in restaurants in Australia. I really cannot say enough good things about this place.

We went to Tuscany for our niece's wedding. The ceremony was at a castle in the middle of nowhere. It was suggested we stay in Montalcino so we could be within walking distance of shops and restaurants. We discovered Santa Lucia online and decided to give it a shot. What a great choice in turned out to be! It was a true Tuscan experience. It was very authentic but all the features in the apartments were very modern. Flat screen TV's (although we never turned ours on. We were in Tuscany!), lots of hot water, good internet, good AC, refrig, microwave, coffee makers, iron available, washing machine nearby. Beautiful architecture and landscaping. My wife and I stayed in the smallest suite and it was very spacious. My mother-in-law and brother-in-law stayed in the main house apartment, which is huge and amazing, Two stories. Two bedrooms with private baths. A third bath. Huge kitchen/dining/living area. Could have stayed for months. The best feature, however, is the folks who run it. Lisa Jane and Andrea were incredible hosts. They made us feel at home and gave us so much help in finding our way around, giving directions, recommending restaurants and wine shops, showing us how to make coffee Italian-style, helping make flight changes, etc. Lisa Jane was even able to arrange a private tour of Siena for us with a guide-friend of hers. One word of caution. Montalcino is beautiful but very hilly. Bring your comfortable shoes. And stay at Santa Lucia.

We stayed in Santa Lucia the end of July for 1 week. Lisa and Andrea, just to let you know, we have literally thought about our stay there EVERY DAY since we've been home! You two are amazing people and we've never been made to feel more comfortable than we experienced staying with you! Great location. Great accommodations. They arranged for an amazing chef to come to our place for a cooking lesson for my family. We now have a new favorite dish. Steamed Zucchini Blossoms stuffed with Ricotta Cheese and pici pasta! We videoed our days cooking experience and have made the dishes we learned a few times now. The ingredients are not as amazing as they are in Italy but they still tastes great. Also, my first experience drinking wine was in Montalcino. How unfair!!! At the age of 50.... I now LOVE a nice glass of Brunello! Montalcino... An experience we'll never forget! Thank you again for a memory of a lifetime!!!

My family of 5 (kids age 11, 12 and 18) stayed at this wonderful apartment for 5 nights in July this summer. The managers Lisa and Andrea were amazing. A month before we arrived, I contacted Lisa to get suggestions on the best way to travel from the Riviera to Tuscany on a Sunday when many car companies were closed. She immediately began working on getting a driver and offered other options for taking a train to another city and then renting from there. Since we arrived in the evening, Lisa and Andrea had stocked the refrigerator with food for the next morning so we didn't need to shop. They were both very friendly and informative, with wonderful suggestions for restaurants and day trips. We stayed in the largest apartment, which was very spacious. The apartment was modernized, clean, and beautifully furnished. My children especially loved the pool and steam room. Even though the pool is small, it is very deep, so it felt wonderful to jump in to cool off. It was never crowded at the pool even though all the apartments were rented. If you visit in the summer, the pool is a must. This is the only apartment within Montalcino that offers a pool. This apartment was our favorite place that we stayed during our two weeks in Italy. Montalcino is a quaint and beautiful town which is centrally located in Tuscany, and the apartment is a short walk to town. The location couldn't be more ideal. We were so happy that we opted to stay in this village over any other that we visited. I highly recommend Santa Lucia!

I have stayed in and around Montalcino a number of times, normally out in the country, but as this trip I had a 20 month baby with me, I thought we would find someone where in a town. We found Santa Lucia and stayed for 9 days. The property is very unique as its within the walls of Montalcino but has some of the characterics of properties you would find in the country, namely the beautiful garden and pools. The pools are not large, as I believe they were once used to tan leather and were converted into pools, as building a pool within the city walls is forbidden. Regardless of the size there were more than adequate when used to cool off from the sun. As Montalcino is a hill town, there is a steep walk up to the main part of the town from the property. The climb is steep but short. Over the course of my stay I pushed a heavy baby buggy up the hill several times a day. To be honest the exercise took the guilt away from tucking into a big pizza or bowl of pasta heavy on the cheese when I got to the top. I stayed in Cannavacciuolo, with my wife and baby daughter, which is a lovely apartment and has its own private garden away from the main garden. The apartment was air conditioned and had a great wifi signal. The main garden is beautifully designed and full of culinery herbs growing everywhere that you can use if you wish. As most people were off exploring the region during the day, we had the garden to ourselves pretty much all the time. I noted a previous reviewer commented on a barbed wire fence in the garden, which from my stay is a misrepresentation. of the beautiful gardens of Santa Lucia. This reviewer also described Montalcino as a "decrepit peasant village", which I find absolutely delusional, and this person must have no experience of historical Italian towns. Montalcino is a beautiful Tuscan hill town. The town itself I believe strikes a perfect balance between a genuine working town for its inhabitants while also catering for the tourists that visit, without losing its identity. Lastly I would liked to mention the absolute professional way in which Lisa and Andreas manage the property. They always had geniunely smiles on their faces when you met them. To me they also both possessed a talent which I believe is rare in the hostipality business, and that is to instinctively know how much interaction each of your guests want, and then to provide that level. Normally I would be on the side of not needing a lot of interaction and to be left to my own devices, but during my stay my baby daughter became a little unwell. I asked Lisa if she could recommend a doctor I could bring her too. Lisa when away and back with an appointment for a local paediatric doctor and then insisted on accompaning me to the doctors to ensure there was no language difficulities due to my pigeon Italian. For all the above points, I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to anyone who would like to visit and stay in beautiful Montalcino.
